Mimosas are Delicious, Fun and Surprisingly Healthy
The mimosa is a simple cocktail consisting of equal parts Champagne (though sparkling wine may be substituted) and chilled, fresh orange juice. Served in a tall Champagne flute, it is a staple of the American brunch and morning weddings. It also frequently appears on First-class service menus for airlines and railways. The prevailing theory is that the Mimosa was invented sometime around 1925 in the Hôtel Ritz Paris by head bartender Frank Meier.
What’s less well known is that mimosas have distinct health benefits. Freshly squeezed orange juice is full of vitamins and minerals including vitamins C and A, to folate, fiber and potassium. As for Champagne, it contains proteins that improve short-term memory and antioxidants, which diminish bad cholesterol, prevent blood clots, and reduce blood vessel damage. Moderate consumption can also help prevent dementia and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

Officially part of Fort Sumter National Monument, Fort Moultrie has ties to The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World War I, and World War II and dates all the way back to 1776. It is an exceptionally patriotic place, and for that reason alone, it makes it the perfect destination to celebrate Memorial Day (May 28) or any warm, beautiful summer or spring day. But, there are so many more reasons to visit and linger at this Charleston destination gem.
Located on Sullivan’s Island, it is an easy trek from any greater Charleston locale, but it is the sheer beauty of the place, easy parking, and almost illegally inexpensive day passes, that make it well worth spending a good chunk of the day here. History buffs will revel in the clear and well-written information boards strategically placed along the walking path to show what events took place, where, when, and why.
With its birds-eye views of Ft. Sumter (actually so close it feels like you can touch the ancient fortress), this patriotic perch also affords sweeping views of the entire harbor, the edge of the Atlantic, and a doll’s house sized distance view of tiny steeples and columned mansions of the Charleston peninsula. If you are lucky, you will catch views of dolphins frolicking in the shimmering waters and a salty, soul-reviving sea breeze.
Parking is exclusively for monument visitors (not the general beach crowd), so it is easy to access and included in your entrance fee. Fees for a group of four adults (family pass) is $5, children age 15 and under are admitted free, single adult tickets are $3, and senior citizens (age 62+) are admitted for $1 each. There is a designated picnic area and dogs are welcome to walk the grounds – though no food or dogs are welcome inside the visitor’s center. Guided tours are also available.

The day of the Cooper River Bridge Run dawned with clear skies, warm, comfortable temperatures, and a crowd of nearly 50,000 people waiting to share in a sense of joy and accomplishment. Or, as HonkyTonk Saloon manager Bob Shipley’s daughter Lauren Shipley (a fellow runner) describes the feeling, as an “indescribable sense of unity”. I think she nailed it. I proudly joined Lauren and the rest and crossed that bridge in an hour and 20 minutes.
Participating in the race reminded me a bit of starting this year with a large and growing team of employees who work with me and their respective teams to do the best they can do every day to keep our clients well fed, happy, and smiling. We’re looking forward to crossing that kind of finish line every single day, even as we look to expand with at least two new Toast locations in 2018.
Running in a competitive race is indeed analogous to running a good life. It reminds me of this quote by Tony Gaskins: “A relationship is a marathon, not a sprint. Many celebrate after the first mile, not realizing that the real trials come later. It’s not about how strong you start. It’s about your mental and emotional conditioning to finish the race.”

Win, Win, Win!
Warming temperatures, the yellow pop of pine pollen, greening lawns and marsh grasses, and blooming azaleas are signs of spring in Charleston and they’re all happening now. It’s the best time of year for outside dining, and Eli’s Table is a beautiful place to enjoy the weather and delicious food with your best dog friend(s).

My mom and I both agreed that this was the best meal we have EVER had in Charleston. I had the roasted chicken, my mom had shrimp & grits, and we both split a deconstructed key lime pie afterward (perhaps the best dessert I’ve ever had in my life). They have a gorgeous back patio where they let you eat dinner and bring your dog! The big thing for us was that they had heaters on the patio, because it was chilly at night and would have been way too cold to sit outside without a heater nearby. Other restaurants we called didn’t have heaters!
Eli’s Table outside patio is beautiful and dog friendly, too.
