Mahagony Gregory – Baker at Toast!, Toast of West Ashley and Toast of Summerville
We caught up with Mahagony when she was whipping up a bunch of gorgeous pies for the entire Toast family on International Pi Day in the Cove Bar & Grille kitchen. The Art Institute of Charleston graduate and experienced (she’s been with Toast West Ashley since its opening in 2016) baker was whipping up French chocolate silk pie, brownie pie and a Mandarin orange crushed pineapple and coconut pie at the time. And, that was just for starters.
Her mother owns a restaurant in her hometown in Aiken, SC. “She loved cooking, but not baking. I helped her with the baking because I loved it,” Mahagony said with enthusiasm. She’s proud of her craft and shared the fact that she attended culinary classes in high school from 9th to 12th grade and was the only student in attendance for all three of those years.
When she’s not baking, she’s taking care of her two year-old daughter and only child, Skylar Thompson. The best part about being a mother? “When she says she loves me. She is just starting to say that. She’s learning so much so fast. She’s like my own little thing.”
The worst part about being a mother? “Knowing she’s going to grow up. It scares me sometimes.”
Mahogany’s own mother was and is a constant source of inspiration to her. “Mom always said, you have to lead by example. My little girl copies everything I do. If Mommy does it, it’s ok for me. And, I stand by that, always.”
Here’s Mahagony with her gorgeous French chocolate silk pie. Happy Mother’s Day, Mahagony and all great mothers out there from everyone at Charleston Hospitality Group.
